University Multicultural Mentor Program (UMMP)

The University Multicultural Mentor Program (UMMP), provided through the Center for Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement , is a valuable opportunity for Incoming first-year undergraduate students thats prepare them to navigate the university during their first year. Faculty and staff are here to assist them and guide them through building their professional network. Being involved in a mentoring relationship opens up the opportunity for first-year students to deepen their relationship with the University of Florida and to jump start their academic careers by gaining insight from great mentors.

Program Expectations

CONNECT MONTHLY

Mentors and mentees must connect once a month, either in-person or in a digital environment, whatever each of you are comfortable with.

GOAL ACCOUNTABILITY

Mentor pairs should work together to create personal, professional, and academic goals for the mentee’s first year in college, and check-in often

SUPPORT

Mentors should provide support and encouragement where needed, and help point mentees to campus resources and involvement opportunities


Mission 

The University Multicultural Mentor Program (UMMP) is designed to support first-year students from a variety of backgrounds in their transition to the University of Florida. This mission is achieved through goal setting, active participation in one-on-one monthly interactions between mentors and mentees, and participation in UMMP events.

Purpose 
  • To facilitate relationships between faculty/staff and students
  • To help students acclimate to the college life at UF through involvement, campus resources, and academic success

BECOME A FACULTY/STAFF MENTOR

THE UNIVERSITY MULTICULTURAL MENTOR PROGRAM (UMMP) PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR INCOMING STUDENTS FROM A VARIETY OF BACKGROUNDS TO BE MENTORED BY A FULL-TIME FACULTY OR STAFF MEMBER WHO SUPPORTS AND GUIDES THEIR TRANSITION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA.

In the program, one or two first-year undergraduate student is assigned to a full-time faculty or staff member. We ask that the faculty or staff member make a serious effort to complete this assignment by scheduling monthly meetings with the student throughout the academic year. The mentoring time commitment is approximately 1-2 hours per month throughout the academic year.

Participants in the program agree this kind of interaction is positive and productive and assists greatly in making this large university more personal for students. We are looking for supportive faculty and staff members from various areas of discipline, expertise, backgrounds, and identities who are willing to support our incoming first-year students.
